Boston University is home to thousands of driven, passionate students who care deeply about fostering an inclusive, sustainable community and have tremendous goals about the world they hope to build. BU Plant-Based exists for exactly that reason. We are a launch-year student organization dedicated to promoting a more sustainable food future, on BU's campus and beyond...
We cannot take full credit for this initiative, though. Rather, we are bringing together two bustling student movements already underway: the Alt Protein Project and the Plant Futures Initiative. Since 2020, the Good Food Institute's Alt Protein Project has helped establish student groups at more than seventy universities around the globe, from Stanford to Wageningen, Delhi to Melbourne. Each group brings together students from different disciplines and different academic stages, all working to define and launch initiatives that help promote a more sustainable food system. Collectively, this global community has already spurred the creation of more than 20 courses and modules, 40 research projects, and 50 jobs and internships dedicated to alternative proteins, with plenty more on the way.
The Plant Futures Initiative brings an equally strong global community. Born out of UC Berkeley, Plant Futures has grown into a global network of college and graduate students working across curriculum, community, careers, and culture change to build a more plant-centered future. Its chapters give students access to an 8-week professional certification in the plant-based sector, an applied learning course that pairs students from dozens of disciplines with real organizations to solve real challenges, and a wider culture-change effort that brings plant-forward ideas to campuses and communities through storytelling and hands-on events.
BU Plant-Based is proud to bring this combined movement to Boston University, and we cannot wait to continue to grow this community together. Stay tuned!
Until next time,
The BU Plant-Based Leadership Team
